Yufuin, in central Oita prefecture, is the most photogenic onsen town in Kyushu — Mt Yufu rising behind the village, walkable streets full of bakeries and craft shops, Kinrin Lake at one end. With kids, it’s also one of the easiest onsen-town stays in Kyushu: most ryokans take young kids, the streets are stroller-friendly, and dinners can be skipped in favor of casual cafes if your kids’ patience is short.
This guide covers three Yufuin family ryokans and how 1-night vs 2-night stays compare for families.
Why Yufuin works well for families
Compared to Kurokawa, Yufuin is bigger, more commercial, and significantly more kid-tolerant. The main street has dozens of cafes and bakeries — so even if a ryokan has a strict 6+ kaiseki dinner, you can take younger kids to eat elsewhere.
- Walking: Yufuin Station to Kinrin Lake ~25 min walk; mostly flat, stroller-OK
- Train access: Yufuin no Mori scenic train from Hakata (2 hr); highway bus 2hr
- Best months: April–May, October–November (cool, foliage)
- Public foot bath: at the station and Kinrin Lake — both free, family-friendly

1-night vs 2-night stays in Yufuin
- 1-night: arrive afternoon, sweets walk on main street, ryokan dinner + bath, leave Day 2 morning. Doable but rushed
- 2-night: Day 1 sweets walk, Day 2 Kinrin Lake morning + Snoopy Chaya lunch + onsen evening, Day 3 leave by 11:00. Best for families with kids under 6
- Combine with Beppu: 1 night Yufuin + 1 night Beppu — covers two onsen styles with a 30-min train transfer
Family-friendly tips
- Yufuin no Mori train: scenic train from Hakata is the kid-favorite arrival route — book 1 month ahead
- Crib / kid futon: free at all three above; reserve at booking
- Stroller: main street is fine; some ryokan paths have steps — confirm at booking
- Diaper change: Yufuin Station has full nursing room; main-street tourist info center too
- Kaiseki timing: most start at 18:00; ask for 17:30 if your kids fade early
- Cash + card: all three take cards
Pair Yufuin with Beppu and the bakery walk
Yufuin pairs with Beppu (30-min Sonic train) for 2-night onsen circuits, or with Aso Farm Land for a 3-day onsen-and-animals trip. The famous bakery walk on Yufuin’s main street is a kid-magnet.
