The JR Hohi Line connects Kumamoto and Oita straight through the Aso caldera. It is a 3-hour scenic mountain ride across some of Kyushu’s most dramatic volcano scenery.
With kids, it’s an underrated alternative to driving — no winding roads to navigate, no parking, and huge windows the whole way.
Best of all is the famous Aso Boy! family sightseeing train, built around a play cabin designed for children.
This guide covers how to ride the Hohi Line with kids, where to stop, how it compares to renting a car, and how to combine the train with Aso’s top family destinations.
Why ride the Hohi Line with kids?
Driving Aso means winding mountain roads, sudden weather changes, and hunting for parking at every viewpoint.
The train delivers all the same views with none of the driving stress. The Aso Boy! cabin adds onboard entertainment that keeps younger kids genuinely happy.
- Route: Kumamoto → Aso → Oita — 148 km / 3 hours
- Aso Boy!: family-themed train (kids play cabin, library, soft seats); 2 round-trips daily on weekends
- Best months: April–May, October–November (foliage); winter possible if no snow on tracks
- Reservation: Aso Boy! requires advance booking; regular Hohi Line trains are unreserved
Rental car vs JR Kyushu Rail Pass (family of 4, 2 days)
Here is a rough cost picture for 2 adults + 2 kids over a two-day Aso trip, so you can see when the train actually wins.
| Option | 2 adults + 2 kids | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rental car (2 days) | ~¥16,000–22,000 | + fuel, parking, tolls, and a driver who can’t enjoy the view |
| JR Kyushu Rail Pass (Northern, 3-day) | ~¥27,000 (kids ~50% off) | Covers Hohi Line, Aso Boy!, plus onward Sonic to Beppu/Yufuin |
| Point-to-point tickets | ~¥13,500 round trip | Cheapest for a single Kumamoto↔Aso day trip |
If you only visit Aso once, point-to-point tickets are cheapest. If you chain Aso with Beppu or Yufuin, the pass pays for itself fast. Check JR Kyushu Rail Pass prices on Klook →
How to ride the JR Hohi Line family-style
JR Hohi Line — Kumamoto to Oita route
Regular trains depart hourly during the daytime. The direct journey takes about 3 hours, longer if you stop along the way.
A family-priced JR Kyushu Rail Pass brings the cost down significantly. Strollers are fine on most trains, though some older cars have steep boarding steps.
- Hours: First 06:00, last 22:00; hourly daytime
- Price: One-way ticket ~¥4,500/adult; kids half-price
Aso Boy! sightseeing train
This is the headline ride: a kids’ play cabin with toys, a small library, panoramic windows, and a “panorama seat” facing the mountains.
There are mascot meet-and-greets and a souvenir shop on board. Because only two round-trips run on weekends, reserve about 1 month ahead.
- Hours: Weekend daily, 2 round-trips; book 1 month ahead
- Price: One-way reserved seat ~¥4,500/adult; kids ~¥2,250
JR Aso Station — base for Hohi Line family stops
Aso Station is the natural midway stop. It has luggage lockers, a kid-friendly cafe, and bus connections to the Mt Aso ropeway and Aso Farm Land.
It’s stroller-friendly with a baby room available, so it works well as a reset point between rides.
- Hours: 06:00–22:00
- Price: Free entry; lockers ~¥400-700
Recommended Hohi Line family itineraries
Here is roughly how a one-day trip times out, so you know what fits before the last train back.

| ~10:30 | Arrive JR Aso Station |
| 11:00–15:00 | Lunch + ropeway or Aso Farm Land |
| 16:00 | Regular Hohi Line train back to Kumamoto |
- 1-day Kumamoto → Aso round trip: morning Aso Boy! out, lunch at Aso, ropeway or farm afternoon, regular train back
- 2-day Kumamoto → Oita: Day 1 Aso Boy! to Aso, overnight in Aso area; Day 2 continue Hohi to Oita, transfer to Sonic for Beppu
- Hohi + Yufuin combo: Aso Boy! → Aso overnight → continue Hohi → Oita → Sonic to Yufuin
For the overnight legs, book early — Aso’s family rooms sell out on foliage weekends. Compare Aso family hotels on Agoda → See our full where to stay in Aso guide for area picks.
