Kagoshima Airport (KOJ) is the gateway to southern Kyushu — Sakurajima volcano, Ibusuki sand baths, the Yakushima ferry, and the Kirishima onsen region. With kids, it’s one of Japan’s more family-friendly mid-size airports.
You’ll find a free indoor foot bath inside the terminal, two large nursing rooms, and a limousine bus that runs straight to Kagoshima city in 40 minutes. This guide covers the terminal layout, every transport option to popular bases, and how to plan a smooth first 4 hours after landing.
Why Kagoshima Airport works for families
Compared with Fukuoka Airport — closer to its city center but always crowded — Kagoshima feels bigger inside, less rushed, and packed with kid-friendly amenities. The famous indoor foot bath sits right in the departure lounge, and it doubles as a free layover treat that buys parents ten quiet minutes.
- Daily international flights: Seoul, Shanghai, Taipei, Hong Kong
- Domestic flights: Tokyo (Haneda + Narita), Osaka (Itami + Kansai), Nagoya, Sapporo
- Connecting flights: to Yakushima (35 min), Amami Oshima (60 min), Tanegashima (35 min)
- Best for: Kagoshima city, Sakurajima, Ibusuki, Kirishima, Yakushima ferry
Kagoshima Airport terminal with kids
Kagoshima Airport — main terminal
The two-floor terminal has stroller-friendly elevators and two large nursing rooms — one on the arrival side, one in departure. A free indoor foot bath (“Oyatto-Sa”) sits on the departure side and is open to all visitors.
The 2nd-floor family restaurant has high chairs, so you can land, settle, and feed everyone before deciding on transport. For the wider city, our Getting Around Kagoshima with Kids guide maps out trains and ferries in detail.
- Hours: 06:00–22:30 (terminal)
- Price: Free entry; foot bath free, towel ~¥300
Limousine bus — to Kagoshima Chuo Station
The direct limousine bus reaches Kagoshima Chuo Station in 40 minutes and Tenmonkan in 45. It has a stroller-friendly luggage compartment, and buses depart every 15–20 minutes after each flight arrival. Children aged 6 and over pay full fare.
If you’d rather lock in city hotels before you even board, compare Kagoshima city hotels on Agoda — staying near Chuo Station or Tenmonkan keeps the Sakurajima ferry within easy reach.
- Hours: First 06:30, last 22:30; every 15–20 min
- Price: Chuo Station ~¥1,400/adult, ~¥700/kid; Tenmonkan ~¥1,400
Hayato JR Station shuttle bus
A free shuttle bus connects the airport to JR Hayato Station in 15 minutes. It’s handy for families taking JR onward to Kirishima Shrine or to Miyazaki via the Sonic line, with departures every 30 minutes during the daytime.
- Hours: 07:00–21:00, every 30 min
- Price: Free shuttle to Hayato Station
