Kyushu autumn foliage peaks late October to mid-November — crisp air, fewer tourists than spring sakura season, and dramatic red maples in the highlands. With kids, it’s arguably the best time to visit: cool walking weather, fewer crowds, ryokan onsen at peak appeal. This guide is a 5-day route hitting prime foliage spots across 3 prefectures.
The route is a real walked itinerary; pair with prefecture-specific guides for accommodation and food details.
When does Kyushu autumn foliage peak?
Foliage moves down the elevation: highlands first, lowlands later.
- Late October: Aso highlands (1,000m+), Kuju mountains, Ebino plateau
- Early November: Yufuin valley, Takachiho gorge, Kurokawa onsen
- Mid November: Kumamoto Castle moat, Saga gardens, Fukuoka city parks
- Plan-ahead: peak windows last about 10 days; monitor JMA forecast 1-2 weeks before

Family-friendly autumn tips
- Layered clothing: morning highlands cold, afternoon valleys warm — bring layers
- Reservations: ryokans book 2 months ahead in autumn peak; airfare also
- Stroller: most foliage spots have stroller-friendly paved paths; gorge bowl needs carrier
- Rain: November rain washes leaves down — buffer day useful
- Kids photo participation: have kids pick up colorful leaves to take home — keeps them engaged
- Best photo time: 10:00-12:00 when sun illuminates leaves from above
- Hot drinks: bring a thermos of tea/cocoa; many viewpoints have no nearby cafes
