Aoshima, on the southern coast of Miyazaki, is one of Kyushu’s most family-friendly beach destinations: shallow water, soft sand, and a palm-lined boulevard.

It’s also a 5-minute walk from Aoshima Beach Park and Aoshima Shrine on its rocky islet. With kids, staying in Aoshima itself — rather than commuting from Miyazaki city — doubles the beach time and removes the morning drive.

Why Aoshima works for families

Most Aoshima hotels are 5–10 minutes from the beach, with onsen baths, beach gear rental, and family-room layouts.

Compared to Miyazaki city stays, you trade some restaurant variety for direct beach access — usually worth it with kids under 10.

Its indoor “Tokonatsu” pool has a 20-metre lane, a shallow round pool for small children, and a jacuzzi — but it opens only in high summer (18 July–30 August in 2026, 10:00–20:00; ¥900 adults / ¥600 children for hotel guests). Best for families who want a pool, a bath, and dinner without leaving the property.

A note on the Aoshima Grand Hotel: for decades the largest hotel in the village, it closed in December 2025 after cracks were found in its hot-water and water-supply pipes, and demolition started on 2 February 2026 (scheduled to run about a year). It is not a booking option, so ignore listings that still show it.
