December is a quiet, good-value month to visit Fukuoka with children. The air is cold but rarely harsh, the crowds are thinner than in autumn, and the city lights up for Christmas.
The catch is timing. Several family favourites close for a few days around New Year, and the sun sets early. This guide covers the weather, what to pack, which spots are open and what to book around.
Is Fukuoka in December Good for Kids? (Quick Answer)
Fukuoka in December works well with kids: it is cold but mild, with daytime highs around 12.6°C, so dress in layers and mix outdoor lights with indoor stops. The zoo closes December 29 to January 1 and the Anpanman Museum closes December 31 and January 1, so plan year-end days carefully.
December Weather in Fukuoka and What to Pack
The Japan Meteorological Agency’s long-term averages for Fukuoka in December are a daytime high of 12.6°C, a night-time low of 5.8°C and a monthly mean of 9.1°C. Rainfall averages about 67.5 mm over the month, with roughly 112 hours of sunshine.
In practice that means cold mornings and evenings and a pleasant midday in the sun. Wind near the waterfront at Momochi and Uminonakamichi feels colder than the numbers suggest.
- Layers: a thermal base layer, a fleece and a windproof outer jacket for each child.
- Hats, gloves and scarves: essential for evening illuminations and for waiting in lines.
- Compact umbrella or rain jackets: December can still bring grey, drizzly days.
- Warm socks and easy shoes: many indoor play areas ask you to remove shoes.
Daylight is short. On December 21 the sun rises around 7:19 and sets around 17:14, so schedule outdoor spots for late morning and early afternoon, and keep evenings for lights and dinner.

Outdoor Days: Zoo, Parks and Island Gardens
December sunshine is thin but real, and cold, dry days are good for walking. Save the outdoor stops for the warmest part of the day.
Fukuoka City Zoo and Botanical Garden
The zoo sits in Minami Park in central Fukuoka and mixes animals with a botanical garden, so little legs can keep moving in the cold.
- Hours: 9:00-17:00, last entry 16:30, closed Mondays (the next day if Monday is a holiday).
- Year-end closure: December 29 to January 1.
- Admission: Adults ¥600, high school ¥300, junior high and under free
Parking is paid, and the official page lists ¥500 for a standard car. If you are staying in the city centre, a bus or taxi is easier.
Ohori Park
The lake loop at Ohori Park is flat and stroller-friendly, and it is a good low-effort stop on a clear day. Our Ohori Park family guide has the details.
Entry is Free. Wrap up warmly, because the wind off the water can bite.
Nokonoshima Island Park
The ferry ride from Meinohama is half the fun. Nokonoshima Island Park is open year-round, with winter hours that close at 17:30, so go early.
- Admission: Adults (high school and above) ¥1,500 / elementary & junior high ¥800 / ages 3+ ¥500 / dogs ¥500 (city ferry round trip: adults ¥460, children ¥240; island bus ¥240/¥120 each way)
- Hours: Mon–Sat 9:00-17:30; Sun & public holidays 9:00-18:30 (17:30 in winter); open year-round
Check the ferry timetable before you set out, and do not plan this on a day with strong wind or heavy rain.
Rainy and Cold Day Backups
When it is grey or freezing, Fukuoka has plenty of indoor options. Our Fukuoka rainy-day guide and the indoor playgrounds and shopping malls guide list more.
Marine World Uminonakamichi
This is the classic cold-weather aquarium day. Winter hours are 10:00-17:00 from December to February, and the aquarium takes a short closure each January (in 2027 it is January 18 to 21).
- Admission: Adults ¥2,500; elementary and junior high school ¥1,200; age 3 to pre-school ¥700; under 3 free
- Typical stay: about 3 hours.
The aquarium has historically opened through the New Year period, but the 2026-27 year-end schedule is not confirmed here. Check the official site before you plan around it.
Canal City Hakata: teamLab and Asobono
Canal City is the easiest all-weather stop in central Fukuoka, and it is close to Hakata Station and the main hotel areas. It has two child-focused play options.
- teamLab Learn and Play! Future Park: ¥500 / 30 min; ¥1,200 unlimited (children); adults same rate, open 10:00–20:00 daily.
- Asobono: First 30 min ~¥1,000/kid; extension ~¥100/10min; adult ~¥500, open 10:00–19:00, open daily.
Fans of Kirby can also visit the Kirby Cafe in Canal City. Weekends and the Christmas period are busy, so go early.
Fukuoka City Science Museum

- Hours: 9:30-21:30 (Basic Exhibition Room 9:30-18:00), closed Tuesdays
- Admission: Basic Exhibition Room (5F) ¥510 adult / ¥310 high school / ¥200 elementary & junior high; Dome Theater (6F) same rates
Check the museum’s official calendar for any year-end closure before you commit.
Fukuoka Anpanman Children’s Museum
For toddlers and preschoolers, the Anpanman museum at Hakata Riverain is the cosy pick. Our Anpanman Museum guide explains tickets and timing.
- Hours: 10:00–17:00 (last entry 16:00); closed Dec 31–Jan 1
- Admission: ¥2,000–¥2,200 flat for everyone aged 1+ (varies by date); under 1 free
Christmas Lights and Winter Events
December evenings are made for illuminations. Fukuoka Tower, Hakata Station and the Canal City area all do seasonal displays, and our Fukuoka Christmas markets and illuminations guide keeps the current list.
The Christmas market at Hakata Station has run in past years, and Fukuoka Tower has run a seasonal ice rink from late November. Exact 2026-27 dates and prices had not been announced when we checked, so look at the official event pages before you go.
Skating with children is also covered in our family ice skating guide. Because the sun sets before 17:30, start lights-viewing with an early dinner and keep little ones warm.

- Anpanman Children’s Museum: closed December 31 and January 1.
- Marine World and Canal City: normally open, but confirm hours.
- Restaurants: many family-run places close for several days, so book ahead or have a convenience-store backup.
If you are travelling on after Christmas, see our Kyushu January-February guide. For a wider view of the month across the island, read our Kyushu in December guide.
Sample 3-Day December Plan
- Day 1: late-morning zoo or Ohori Park, early dinner, then Fukuoka Tower or Hakata Station lights.
- Day 2: Marine World Uminonakamichi for the day, back by dusk.
- Day 3: Canal City with teamLab or Asobono, then the Anpanman museum or science museum depending on ages.
Swap days if rain is forecast, and keep the zoo for the driest morning. Our 3-day winter itinerary offers another version.
Where to Stay
Hakata Station puts you close to the shinkansen, the subway and Canal City. Our Fukuoka area comparison explains how Hakata, Tenjin and Momochi differ for families. Book early for the Christmas weekend and New Year.
