Ureshino Tea with Kids: Saga’s Green Tea Town Guide (2026)

Ureshino is one of Japan’s three top green tea towns, in the southwest corner of Saga prefecture.

It is also the most family-doable tea town in Kyushu: workshops are short, hands-on, and toddler-forgiving.

When patience runs out, the onsen town next door gives you stroller-friendly downtime and a free foot bath.

Below: which tea experiences are realistic with kids, what they cost, and how to pair one with an onsen night from Fukuoka.

Quick Answer: Ureshino Tea with Kids

Ureshino-cha is a mild, low-caffeine green tea grown in southwest Saga, and three experiences suit families.

Wabisuki grinds matcha (~¥1,500, 30 min, ages 4+); Ureshino Chaen picks leaves (~¥2,500, May–June, ages 5+); Suiransai pours a ¥600 tea flight indoors for all ages.

Experience Price Time Best ages & season
Wabisuki (matcha grinding) ~¥1,500/person 30 min 4+, year-round, closed Wed
Ureshino Chaen (tea picking) ~¥2,500/person 30–60 min 5+, May–June only
Suiransai (tasting cafe) ~¥600 flight, ~¥900 sweets set 30–45 min All ages, incl. under-3s, closed Tue

What is Ureshino tea?

Ureshino-cha is a steamed green tea (sencha and gyokuro varieties) grown on the misty hills around Ureshino.

Cultivation here dates to roughly 1440, and the town’s signature kamairicha is pan-fired, giving a rounder, toastier cup.

It is milder and sweeter than Uji or Shizuoka tea, with far less caffeine than matcha — so kids can actually taste it.

  • Caffeine: lower than coffee or matcha; one small cup is fine for kids 5+
  • Flavor: gentle umami, slightly grassy, no bitterness when brewed properly
  • Allergens: none; some workshops include sweets that contain wheat or egg
  • Best season: tea picking is May–June; tasting is year-round

Wabisuki Tea House — easy matcha grinding

Wabisuki runs 30-minute workshops where kids hand-mill tea leaves with a stone grinder, then whisk their own matcha.

Seating is tatami, but kids can stand at the grinder. Reservations are needed on weekends.

  • Hours: 10:00–17:00, closed Wed
  • Workshop fee: Matcha grinding workshop ~¥1,500/person

Ureshino Chaen — tea picking on the hills

Tea picking on a working farm, May and June only: kids get a basket and an apron and pick their own leaves.

Staff steam and dry the harvest on the spot, so you carry home tea your child picked that morning.

Hill paths are uneven, so bring a carrier rather than a stroller; it slots into our 3-day Takeo & Ureshino itinerary.

  • Hours: 9:00–16:00, May-June only, weather dependent
  • Workshop fee: Tea picking ~¥2,500/person (May-June only)

Suiransai — tasting cafe (no workshop, easiest with toddlers)

Suiransai is a tea-tasting cafe in the onsen town center, with table seating and a kids menu.

Its ¥600 flight of three Ureshino varieties is the easiest win with under-3s who can’t sit through a workshop.

For lunch nearby, see our Saga family food guide.

  • Hours: 10:00–18:00, closed Tue
  • Price: Tea flight ~¥600; sweets set ~¥900

Family-friendly tips

  • Pick the right season: tea picking only works May–June; matcha grinding and tasting are year-round
  • Workshop length: 30–60 min — long enough to remember, short enough to hold interest
  • What to wear: closed shoes for tea fields; socks-OK for tatami workshops
  • Caffeine for kids: one small cup is fine for 5+; under-3s can sip warm hojicha (roasted tea, almost no caffeine)
  • Rain-friendly: Wabisuki and Suiransai are indoor; Ureshino Chaen cancels in rain
  • Reservations: book 1 week ahead in spring/autumn; walk-ins OK in winter

Combine with Ureshino Onsen

Ureshino is a working onsen town: most ryokans have private family baths, and the town-center foot bath is free.

A morning tea workshop plus an onsen ryokan night is the classic family circuit from Fukuoka.

Getting to Ureshino from Fukuoka

  • Car: about 1 hour by expressway — best for tea fields and nap timing
  • Highway bus: Hakata to Ureshino Onsen, roughly 1.5 hours, stops in the town center
  • Train: limited express to Takeo-Onsen, then one Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen stop to Ureshino-Onsen Station

FAQ: Ureshino tea with kids

Can kids drink Ureshino tea?

Yes — one small cup suits ages 5+; under-3s do better with hojicha, which has almost no caffeine.

Do we need to reserve a workshop?

Book a week ahead in spring and autumn; winter walk-ins are usually fine, except Wabisuki on weekends.

What is the rainy-day plan?

Wabisuki and Suiransai are indoors; tea picking cancels, so keep an indoor Saga activity as backup.
