Mentaiko — spicy cod roe — is Fukuoka’s most famous food souvenir, and one of the more surprising kid-friendly experiences in the city. Several factories run hands-on workshops where children mix and seal their own jar of mild mentaiko, then take it home. With kids, this is more memorable than just buying it at the airport.
This guide covers three factory experiences in and near Fukuoka, what to expect at each, and how mild “kids mentaiko” differs from the adult version.
What is mentaiko (and is it OK for kids)?
Mentaiko is pollock roe (egg sacs from cod) cured in salt, soy sauce, and chili peppers. It’s eaten on rice, in pasta, on bread — basically anywhere a salty topping works. The chili content is the only kid concern.
- Adult version: medium-spicy, not for kids under 6 unless they like heat
- Mild version (甘口): almost no chili, fine for kids 4+
- White version (白い明太子): zero chili, just salty roe — best for toddlers
- Allergens: fish (roe), soy, wheat (in some seasonings)
- Sodium: high — small portions only for kids
Mentaiko Workshops & Factory Tours You Can Try with Kids
Hakata Mentai Jukuseiya — central Hakata workshop
The most kid-doable option: a 30-minute hands-on workshop in central Hakata where kids massage seasoning into roe sacs and seal their own labeled jar. No factory walk, no long bus ride. Reservation needed.
- Hours: 10:00–18:00, closed Tue
- Workshop fee: Workshop ~¥2,500/person (incl. take-home jar)
Fukutaro Mentaiko Factory (Asakura)
A full factory tour in Asakura (45 min from Hakata by car) with a glass-walled production floor, English audio guide, and a tasting bar at the end. The on-site shop sells a mild kids version. Better for older kids 6+ who can sit through a 60-min tour.
- Hours: 9:00–17:00, closed Tue
- Tour fee: Factory tour Free; tasting set ~¥500
Kanefuku Mentai Park (Oomuta)
A bigger theme-park-style facility 50 min south of Fukuoka, with a free production-floor walk, mentaiko-themed playground, and a food court serving fresh mentaiko onigiri. Best with younger kids — lots of play space, no need to be quiet.
- Hours: 9:00–18:00, open daily
- Entry: Entry Free; food court ~¥600/person
Family-friendly tips
- Pick the right one: workshops (Hakata Mentai Jukuseiya) for hands-on; factory tours (Fukutaro) for bigger kids; Mentai Park for younger kids
- Mild version for kids: ask for “amaguchi” (mild) or “shiroi mentaiko” (white, no chili) at the gift shop
- Refrigeration: mentaiko must stay cold — ask for an ice pack at checkout if you’re flying out
- Souvenirs: small jars (~¥800) travel better than large packs; vacuum-sealed lasts ~1 week unrefrigerated
- Reservations: Hakata Mentai Jukuseiya books out 1 week ahead on weekends
- English support: all three sites have English explanations; staff English varies
How to eat mentaiko at home with kids
Bring the souvenir home and try these kid-friendly preparations:
- Mentaiko rice ball: small piece on plain rice, wrapped in nori — easy snack
- Mentaiko butter pasta: half a roe sac + butter + spaghetti — milder than the typical adult version
- On toast: mild mentaiko + cream cheese on toast — Western kids’ favorite
- Avoid raw + heavy chili for under-3s
Pair with a Fukuoka half-day
Hakata Mentai Jukuseiya is a 5-minute walk from Hakata Station — easy to combine with shopping or a Hakata ramen lunch. Fukutaro is a stop on the way to Asakura’s onsen towns. Mentai Park works as a day trip with the kids’ play area.
