Sasebo, on the western coast of Nagasaki prefecture, has been home to the U.S. Navy since 1945. The ongoing American presence created the Sasebo burger — handmade, oversized, served in waxed paper, eaten by hand. With kids, this is the rare Kyushu meal where they recognize the format immediately.
This guide covers three classic burger shops, what to expect on the menu, and how to handle a Sasebo lunch as part of a Huis Ten Bosch day or a coastal drive.
What is a Sasebo burger?
A Sasebo burger is bigger than American chains, made-to-order, and built around a thick beef patty with bacon, cheese, lettuce, tomato, and a fried egg as standard. The bun is soft, the sauce is smoky-sweet (close to BBQ sauce), and most shops serve the burger split in half so adults can share.
- Size: regular ~250g; “big” can hit 400g — easy to share with a kid
- Cooking: patties cooked from raw to order; takes 10–15 min
- Allergens: wheat (bun), egg (often fried egg topping), dairy (cheese), soy (sauce)
- Spice level: zero — kid-safe
Where to try Sasebo burgers with kids
Log Kit — the kid-tested counter
Log Kit is the oldest Sasebo burger shop (1971) and the most family-friendly: indoor table seating, a kids menu with mini burger + fries, and high chairs. Less line than the more famous Big Man on weekends. English menu available.
- Hours: 11:00–21:00, closed Tue
- Price: Regular burger ~¥1,200; mini ~¥600; kids set ~¥900
Big Man — the most famous shop
Big Man is the most photographed Sasebo burger spot. Lines on weekends, but the burgers are the largest of the three (~400g). Counter seating + small upstairs dining room. Best for older kids 6+ who can wait through the queue.
- Hours: 10:00–21:00, open daily
- Price: Regular burger ~¥1,400; family avg ~¥4,500
Hikari — the smallest, fastest counter
A tiny 6-seat counter, fast service (8 min), no kids menu but they’ll halve a regular burger and split it for siblings. Best as a quick stop between Sasebo and Huis Ten Bosch. Cash only.
- Hours: 10:00–19:30, closed Wed
- Price: Regular burger ~¥1,000
What to order with kids
- Cheese burger: classic, toddler-friendly
- Mini burger (Log Kit only): kid-sized, ¥600 — perfect for under-5s
- Skip the egg topping: ask “tamago nuki” if your kid has an egg allergy or doesn’t like runny yolks
- Skip the sauce: ask “sosu hikame” (light sauce) for picky eaters
- Half the burger: ask staff to “futatsu ni kitte kudasai” (cut in two) for sharing
- Drinks: most shops serve cola, ginger ale, and orange juice; some have free water for kids
Family-friendly tips
- Plan to wait: even Log Kit takes 15 min from order to plate; bring a snack for hungry toddlers
- Eat with both hands: these are too big for a fork; have wet wipes ready
- Stroller: Log Kit is stroller-OK; Big Man tight; Hikari has no space — fold up
- Cash + card: Log Kit and Big Man take cards; Hikari is cash-only
- Best timing: 11:30 sharp avoids the lunch rush; 14:00 is also calm
Pair with Huis Ten Bosch or coastal drive
Sasebo is a 30-minute drive from Huis Ten Bosch and a 90-minute drive from Fukuoka. The classic family circuit is Huis Ten Bosch morning → Sasebo burger lunch → Sasebo Yonkacho shopping street afternoon. Or pair with the Kujukushima coastal cruise.
