The JR Karatsu Line — and its connecting Chikuhi Line — runs from Fukuoka through pine forests and coastal towns to Karatsu and beyond. With kids, it’s the easiest way to reach Karatsu without a rental car: subway from Hakata, transfer at Meinohama, then 80 minutes to Karatsu Station.
This guide covers how to ride the line family-style, where to stop, and how to handle the boarding logistics with strollers.
Why ride the Karatsu Line with kids?
Driving Saga is fine, but the Karatsu Line offers what driving can’t: scenic coastal stretches with no parking stress, kids can move around, and you can reach Karatsu directly from Hakata Station without changing transport modes.
- Route: Hakata → Meinohama → Karatsu (1.5 hours direct via subway-Chikuhi-Karatsu transfer)
- Frequency: every 20–30 min during daytime; less frequent late evening
- Best months: April–May and October–November (cool, clear coastal views)
- Cost: ~¥1,160 one-way Hakata to Karatsu without rail pass
How to ride the JR Karatsu Line family-style
JR Karatsu / Chikuhi Line — Hakata to Karatsu
The Karatsu Line is operated by JR Kyushu, while the Chikuhi Line links it to Fukuoka subway. Through-running trains from Hakata reach Karatsu in 80–90 min. Stroller-OK, but some stations have stairs only — Hakata, Meinohama, and Karatsu have elevators.
- Hours: First 06:00, last 23:00; every 20-30min daytime
- Price: Hakata-Karatsu ~¥1,160/adult; kids half-price
JR Chikuhi Line connection — Meinohama transfer
From Hakata, the Fukuoka subway runs through to the Chikuhi Line via the Meinohama transfer point. With kids, sit in the front car for an easier transfer experience — fewer people, less crowding at platforms.
- Hours: First 05:30, last 23:30
- Price: Through-running with subway and Karatsu Line
Karatsu / Kashii Line stations — onward connections
From Karatsu, the Karatsu Line continues toward Saga via Nishi-Karatsu and Imari (longer route, less direct). The Kashii Line is a separate suburban line useful for Munakata and Itoshima trips.
- Hours: 06:00–22:00
- Price: Variable; Saga onward ~¥1,500/adult

Family-friendly tips
- Suica / Nimoca / SUGOCA: works seamlessly through subway and JR Kyushu Karatsu Line
- Stroller: foldable strollers easier; some older Karatsu Line trains have steep boarding
- Snacks: bring own; trains have no vending; stations have small kiosks
- Bathroom: most trains have toilets; Hakata, Meinohama, and Karatsu stations have full facilities
- JR Kyushu Rail Pass: covers Karatsu Line; useful if combining Saga with other prefecture trips
- Cash + IC: ticket counters take cards; vending machines IC + cash
Pair the train with key Saga family stops
The line gives car-free access to Karatsu Castle, Niji-no-Matsubara beach, and Yobuko (via local bus from Karatsu Station). Combine with a Karatsu overnight for the best family flow.
