The JR Nichinan Line runs along Miyazaki’s Pacific coast — palm trees, beaches, and dramatic cliffs roll past the window the whole way.
With kids, it’s a relaxed alternative to driving the Nichinan Coast. There’s no car-seat hassle, little ones can move around, and the sea views are far easier to enjoy from a train window than from the back of a car.
This guide covers how to ride the line family-style, where to stop, where to grab a Miyazaki beef lunch, and how to combine the train with the Cape Toi area and other key Miyazaki destinations.
Why ride the JR Nichinan Line with kids?
The 95 km line runs from Miyazaki Station south through Aoshima and Obi, continuing toward the Cape Toi area.
Driving the same coast takes about two hours each way. The train splits that journey into manageable, kid-friendly chunks with several natural stops to stretch legs and refuel.
Here’s the route at a glance:
| Detail | Info |
|---|---|
| Route | Miyazaki → Aoshima → Obi → Toi → Shibushi (95 km / 2hr 30min) |
| Frequency | Every 60–90 min in daytime; less in the evening |
| Best months | April–November; avoid the July–August humid heat |
| Cost | ¥1,800 one-way Miyazaki to Toi without a rail pass |
How to ride the JR Nichinan Line family-style
JR Nichinan Line — main route
This is a single-track scenic line operated by JR Kyushu. Strollers are fine on most trains, though older cars have steep boarding steps.
Many trains are bathroom-equipped, and family-priced JR pass options bring fares down significantly. For planning trains versus a rental car, see our Getting Around Miyazaki with Kids guide.
- Hours: First 06:00, last 22:00; every 60–90 min in daytime
- Price: Miyazaki–Toi ~¥1,800/adult; kids half-price
JR Aoshima Station — beach access stop
Aoshima Station is 25 minutes south of Miyazaki Station and a 10-minute walk from Aoshima Beach Park.
It has stroller-friendly elevator access, small lockers, and a kids-welcome cafe across the street — the best mid-line stop for families. Pair it with our Aoshima Beach Park with Kids guide for swimming, cafes, and toilet info.
- Hours: 06:00–22:00
- Price: Free entry; lockers ~¥300–400
JR Obi Station — castle-town & lunch stop
Obi is 50 minutes south of Miyazaki Station, a former samurai-domain town with the well-preserved Obi Castle ruins.
The station has rental bikes (with kid-trailer), a small cafe, and free English maps. For lunch, the lanes around the castle serve local Miyazaki beef set meals and kid-friendly obento — a perfect mid-day break. See more picks in our Family-Friendly Food in Miyazaki guide.
- Hours: 06:30–21:30
- Price: Free entry; rental bike ~¥800/day
Toward Cape Toi — wild horses & the southern coast
Past Obi, the line continues south toward the Cape Toi (Toi-misaki) area, famous for its herd of semi-wild Misaki horses grazing on the headland.
The cape sits a short local bus ride beyond Toi Station, so it works best as a half-day add-on rather than a quick hop. For the full driving-and-stopping picture of this stretch, see our Nichinan Coast with Kids guide.
