Nishi-Nippon Railroad (“Nishitetsu”) is Fukuoka’s private rail and bus network. It runs parallel to JR but covers different routes.
The Tenjin-Omuta line goes directly to Dazaifu Tenmangu, the famous shrine kids love. Nishitetsu buses also reach most of central Fukuoka where JR doesn’t go.
With kids, knowing when to use Nishitetsu vs JR can save you 30 minutes and ¥500 on a typical sightseeing day.
Where do you actually buy it? Passes are sold on the day at the Tenjin Bus Center, the Hakata Station info center, and Dazaifu station.
But on-the-day windows can be slow with kids in tow. To skip the queue, you can pre-book the Fukuoka tourist pass on Klook — it’s English-language, mobile-friendly, and more reliable than the counter.
This guide covers the Nishitetsu day pass options, family pricing, and which destinations they unlock.
Why use Nishitetsu (vs JR) with kids?
Three reasons stand out for families:
- The Nishitetsu Tenjin-Omuta line goes directly to Dazaifu — JR requires a transfer.
- Nishitetsu buses run more frequently than JR around Tenjin and Hakata.
- The day pass covers both rail and bus, simplifying logistics with kids and strollers.
- Nishitetsu day pass: ¥1,000/adult, ¥500/kid; unlimited rail + bus within central Fukuoka
- Dazaifu day pass: ¥1,000/adult includes round-trip Tenjin-Dazaifu rail + city buses
- Best for: Dazaifu shrine, Yanagawa river boats, Ohori Park, kid-friendly suburban explorations
- Not best for: Hakata Station + bullet train transfers (JR is closer)

The “Fukuoka Tourist City Pass” via Nishitetsu covers all subway, JR within Fukuoka city, and Nishitetsu rail + bus inside the city.
It’s available at major stations and tourist info centers. With kids, the one-day version is best for packed sightseeing days.
- Hours: Sales 06:00–21:00
- Price: Adult ~¥1,000; kids ~¥500; unlimited rail+bus 1 day
Buying online avoids the counter wait: reserve the Fukuoka pass on Klook for instant, English-language confirmation before you even land. Not sure which pass fits? Compare options in our Fukuoka Tourist City Pass vs Subway Pass guide.
Tenjin-Omuta line — Dazaifu and Yanagawa direct access
The flagship Nishitetsu line departs from Tenjin Station every 5–10 minutes.
It reaches Dazaifu in about 25 minutes (Futsukaichi transfer), and Yanagawa in 50 minutes. Trains are stroller-friendly, and a family-priced 1-day pass is available.
- Hours: First 05:30, last 23:30; every 5-10min daytime
- Price: Tenjin-Dazaifu round-trip ~¥1,000/adult; kids half-price
Heading to the shrine? A Klook Dazaifu day-trip pass bundles the round-trip fare, so you skip the ticket window at the gate. For the river-boat run, a Yanagawa punting day trip on Klook packages the boat too.
Nishitetsu Kashii Line — suburban families
This suburban line connects Kashii to Tenjin and Marinoa.
It’s useful for Marine World aquarium trips, since Kashii station sits near the aquarium. It’s less direct than JR for Marine World, but cheaper with the day pass.
- Hours: First 06:00, last 23:00
- Price: Variable; pass-eligible
Nishitetsu vs JR vs Subway — which to use with kids
- Hakata Station to Tenjin: subway (5 min, ¥210) — easiest with kids
- Tenjin to Dazaifu: Nishitetsu (25 min direct) — clearly best
- Tenjin to Yanagawa: Nishitetsu (50 min) — JR equivalent is much longer
- Hakata to Kitakyushu: JR (Sonic train, 40 min) — Nishitetsu doesn’t reach
- Around city sightseeing: combine the subway + a Nishitetsu day pass for best value — see our full Fukuoka public transport family guide
