Saga Airport (HSG) is one of Kyushu’s smaller airports — roughly 1/10 the passenger volume of Fukuoka.
But for families flying in from Tokyo or Seoul, it’s often the easier place to land with kids.
You get a compact terminal, shorter security lines, and no long stroller treks between gates.
Best of all, it puts you within 30–45 minutes of Saga city and Karatsu the moment you walk out the door.
This guide covers the terminal layout with kids in mind, your transport options, and where to base yourself after landing.
Why families pick Saga over Fukuoka
Fukuoka Airport is faster if Hakata is your goal, but Saga is dramatically less crowded.
With small kids, that difference matters more than the extra distance.
You get shorter immigration queues on international flights, calmer baggage claim, and stroller paths that aren’t blocked by tour groups.
- Daily international flights: Seoul (Incheon), Shanghai, Taipei (limited)
- Domestic flights: Tokyo (Haneda), Tokyo (Narita) — major Japanese cities
- Best for: Saga city, Karatsu, Yobuko, Takeo, Ureshino destinations
- Avoid if: heading directly to Fukuoka — Fukuoka airport is much closer
Saga Airport terminal layout for families
Saga Airport — main terminal
This is a single-terminal airport, with arrivals all on one floor.
That means no escalators or elevators between baggage claim and the exit — a real win when you’re pushing a stroller and dragging suitcases.
Family amenities include a nursing room (baby food prep + diaper changing), a high-chair-equipped restaurant, and stroller rental at the info desk.
- Hours: 06:30–22:00 (terminal)
- Price: Free; airport WiFi 60 min free
Saga Airport bus stop — to Saga city / Karatsu
Shuttle buses connect the airport to Saga city center (40 min) and Karatsu (60 min), timed to flight arrivals.
Each bus has a stroller-friendly luggage compartment, and you can pay with cash, IC card, or PayPay.
- Hours: Timed to flight arrivals; first 07:00, last 22:30
- Price: Saga city ~¥800/adult; Karatsu ~¥1,500/adult; kids half-price
If the bus drops you in Karatsu, lock in a family room early — castle-coast hotels fill fast on weekends. → Check Agoda rates for family hotels in Karatsu, and see our full Karatsu with kids day-trip guide for what to do once you arrive.
Saga Airport rental car desks
Five rental car companies have desks at the airport: Toyota Rent-a-Car, Times, Nissan, Nippon Rent-a-Car, and Budget.
Pre-book a family-size minivan (Sienta or Voxy) — walk-in stock is rare in summer, so the counter often can’t help last minute.
- Hours: 08:00–21:00
- Price: Compact ~¥6,000/day; minivan ~¥10,000/day
A car is the smoothest way to reach Karatsu, Takeo, and Ureshino with kids and luggage. → Book your Saga rental car & day tours on Klook before you fly to guarantee a child seat and a minivan. Not sure whether to drive or take the train? Compare options in our getting around Saga with kids guide.
Family-friendly tips
- Arrival queues: morning flights (06:00–09:00) and evening flights (17:00–20:00) are quietest
- Baby room: 2nd-floor nursing room has microwave, hot water dispenser, kids changing tables
- Stroller rental: free at info desk, return when leaving the airport (not for offsite use)
- Restaurants: Saga noodle / Saga gyu lunch options on departure side; arrivals side has only a small cafe
- SIM/WiFi rental: 1 desk on departure side; airport WiFi is free for 60 min
- Cash + card: most desks take cards; bus accepts cash + IC + PayPay
How to choose a base after Saga arrival
- Saga city: 40 min by bus or car — central for Saga prefecture exploration
- Karatsu: 60 min by car — north coast, castle, beach, Yobuko 20 min further
- Takeo or Ureshino: 80–90 min by car — onsen towns
- Fukuoka: 90 min by car / 2hr by bus + train — only if no Fukuoka airport flight option
For an onsen-first arrival, both spa towns are easy first-night bases — see where to stay in Takeo Onsen with kids or Ureshino Onsen with kids. → Check Agoda rates for Ureshino onsen ryokan if you want to soak the same day you land.
Pair Saga arrival with day-1 activities
The classic family circuit after a morning arrival is simple.
Drive 60 minutes to Karatsu for a beach-and-castle afternoon, then dinner back at your hotel.
Or drive 80 minutes to Ureshino for an immediate onsen stay.
Landing on a rainy day? Saga city has the museum and library option close to the bus terminal.

Saga Airport with kids: FAQ
Is there luggage storage at Saga Airport?
Yes — coin lockers sit near the arrivals exit, and the info desk holds oversized bags during opening hours.
With young kids, lockers are handy if you want to explore before your hotel check-in time.
How long does international arrival take with kids?
Plan on 20–35 minutes from gate to exit on a typical international flight.
Because volumes are low, immigration and baggage claim rarely back up the way they do at Fukuoka.
What are the food options for families on arrival?
The arrivals side has only a small cafe, so it’s thin for a full meal.
For Saga noodles or Saga gyu, cross to the departure side, or stock kid snacks before you fly.
