Udo Shrine (鵜戸神宮) is unlike any other shrine in Japan — built directly inside a sea-cliff cave on Miyazaki’s Nichinan coast, with crashing Pacific waves below and bright red torii gates lining the rocky descent. With kids, it’s the rare cultural site that genuinely thrills them: stone steps, ocean spray, and a luck-stone toss game that 5-year-olds love.
This guide covers the walk down with strollers, the famous undama (lucky stone) toss, and how to time the visit around the rest of a Miyazaki coast day.
Why Udo Shrine works for kids
Most Japanese shrines are quiet, walkable courtyards. Udo is the opposite: a 200-step descent through cliffside torii gates, an ocean cave inside, and an interactive throw-stone-into-target game (undama) that gives kids a game to win. Kids 4+ usually love the whole experience.
- Walk distance: 800m round trip from parking; 200 stone steps down + 200 back up
- Stroller compatibility: not stroller-friendly; bring a baby carrier for under-3s
- Open hours: 06:00–19:00 (April–September), 07:00–18:00 (October–March)
- Best months: April–November (cool); winter still doable but cliff path can be wet/icy
- Drive time: Miyazaki city 50 min / Aoshima 25 min / Cape Toi 30 min
Visiting Udo Shrine with kids
Udo Shrine — main complex
The shrine sits 65m below the cliff parking lot, accessed by stone steps and a paved path along the rock face. The main hall is built into a natural sea cave; visitors can walk inside. Coin lockers at the gate are useful for stroller storage.
- Hours: 06:00–19:00 (Apr-Sept); 07:00–18:00 (Oct-Mar)
- Price: Free entry; offerings ~¥100
Udo Shrine parking lot
Two parking lots at the top of the cliff: lower lot (closer, smaller) and upper lot (larger, longer walk). The lower lot is preferred with kids — saves an extra 5-min walk in each direction. Parking is free for shrine visitors.
- Hours: 06:00–19:00 (matches shrine)
- Price: Free for shrine visitors
Undama luck-stone toss
The signature kids’ activity at Udo: 5 small clay stones for ¥100, throw them onto a small target rock in the ocean below. If you hit, your wish comes true. Boys throw left-handed, girls right-handed (custom). Kids 4+ love this; it’s safe, non-strenuous, and they keep the souvenirs.
- Hours: Same as shrine hours
- Price: 5 stones ~¥100; cash only
How to plan the visit with kids
- Best time: 09:00–11:00 — cooler, fewer crowds, better light for photos
- Total visit time: 60–90 minutes including the stone toss
- Stairs warning: descent is fine; ascent is steep and tiring with toddlers — carry on the way back if needed
- Slippery: stones get wet from sea spray — wear shoes with grip
- Sun exposure: minimal shade on the path; sun hats and water for kids in summer
- Photo spots: red torii arch with ocean below = the photo of the trip
Family-friendly tips
- Restrooms: at the parking lot only; none inside the shrine area
- Diaper change: parking lot restroom; not stroller-accessible
- Snacks: small souvenir shop near parking sells ice cream and rice balls
- Cash: undama stones are cash-only (¥100 per set)
- Buses: limited public bus from Miyazaki Station; rental car much easier
- Souvenirs: lucky-charm bracelets ¥500 — kid-favorite take-home
