Amakusa, the cluster of islands south of Kumamoto, lives on the sea. Boats pull in fresh fish at Hondo and Ushibuka ports every morning, and most of the islands’ restaurants open just after the auctions. With kids, this is one of the simpler “really fresh seafood” experiences in Kyushu — almost everywhere has a kids set, and the dolphin cruise pairs naturally with lunch.
This guide covers three styles — counter sushi, set-meal teishoku, and harbor-side fish house — and how to combine seafood with the rest of an Amakusa day.
What’s caught in Amakusa
Amakusa fishermen catch a wider seasonal mix than typical mainland ports. The kid-relevant species:
- Tai (sea bream): white, flaky, mild — easiest for kids
- Aji (horse mackerel): slightly oilier, often grilled — kid-friendly
- Saba (mackerel): stronger flavor, usually shime-saba (vinegared) — try a small bite
- Take (octopus): chewy, tasty, best in tempura form for kids
- Uni / ikura: skip for under-5s — strong flavor, allergy risk
Where to try Amakusa seafood with kids
Marushin Sushi (Hondo) — counter sushi with kids menu
Marushin is a small counter-style sushi shop in Amakusa Hondo, owner-run, with a printed kids menu (cooked tamago, ebi, salmon, tempura roll). Counter seating + a small tatami room for families. Reservation recommended on weekends.
- Hours: 11:30–14:00, 17:00–21:00, closed Tue
- Price: Lunch set ~¥2,500; kids set ~¥1,200
Misaki Teishoku — full set-meal harbor restaurant
Misaki overlooks the Ushibuka harbor and serves a “today’s catch” teishoku set — sashimi + grilled fish + miso soup + rice — for ¥1,800. Kids set with cooked items only available. Wide tatami room, easy with toddlers.
- Hours: 11:00–15:00, 17:00–20:00, closed Mon
- Price: Today's catch teishoku ~¥1,800; kids set ~¥900
Tairyou Maru — fishermen’s lunch counter
Tairyou Maru is a no-frills counter near the dolphin-cruise dock. Fast service, generous donburi (rice bowl) options, and you can be in and out in 30 minutes — perfect if you have a 13:00 cruise reservation.
- Hours: 10:30–14:30, closed Wed
- Price: Donburi ~¥1,200; family avg ~¥4,000
Family-friendly tips
- Cooked over raw for under-5s: most shops have grilled or tempura versions of every fish; ask for “yaki” or “tempura”
- Order set meals: teishoku gives you rice, soup, pickles — a full meal, not just sashimi
- Skip wasabi for kids: ask for “sabi nuki” — almost universal request
- Allergens: shellfish (shrimp, octopus), soy, wheat (in batter, sauces)
- Cash: smaller harbor restaurants are cash-only; bring ~¥6,000 for a family of four
- Reservations: weekends and dolphin-cruise season (May-Oct) book out by 10:00
Pair seafood with the dolphin cruise
The classic family circuit: morning dolphin cruise (10:00 boat) → 30-min drive to Hondo → lunch at Marushin or Misaki → afternoon at Amakusa Five Bridges drive or beach. Or reverse: lunch at Tairyou Maru first, then 13:00 cruise.
