Are Zakimi Castle Ruins worth it with kids?
Zakimi Castle Ruins is our favorite free stop in central Okinawa. The 15th-century stone walls are climbable in the safe, low sections, admission is Free (castle grounds), and the grounds are Grounds open 24 hours.
Kids treat the curved walls as a fortress playground; adults get one of the best hilltop sea views on the island. Allow about an hour, and skip the stroller — carriers work better on the grass and steps.
What about Cape Zanpa and the pottery village?
Cape Zanpa combines a white lighthouse (Free (lighthouse climb ¥300, junior-high age and up)) with dramatic cliffs and — crucially — a large free playground in the adjacent park. It’s the rare scenic stop where kids ask to stay longer.

There’s no train past Naha, so a rental car is non-negotiable for this stretch. Chatan is about 40–50 minutes from Naha Airport, and Chatan → Yomitan → Onna runs south-to-north in neat 15–20 minute hops along Route 58.
