KAI Beppu with Kids: Our Family Review + 5 Booking Tips (Lobby Ennichi, Jug Band & Footbath)

We spent one summer night with our two daughters at KAI Beppu, the Hoshino Resorts onsen ryokan on the Beppu seafront.

Beppu is the overnight trip we repeat most from our home in Fukuoka. KAI Beppu is the stay the kids still talk about, and the reason is not the room. It is what happened in the lobby after dinner.

Our Quick Verdict: Is KAI Beppu Good for Kids?

Yes, for a one-night treat. KAI Beppu is a calm ryokan with no pool and no kids’ room, but our children loved the evening ennichi games, the bucket-and-tub jug band, and shaved ice at the bayside footbath. If you want waterslides, choose Suginoi instead.

  • Best for: families who want a ryokan night that is still fun for children, with central Beppu and the Hells close by.
  • Think twice if: your kids need a pool or a play room to burn off energy, or you are looking for a cheap base for several nights.
  • When we went: July. One night, driving from Fukuoka.

The Evening Ennichi in the Lobby

An ennichi is the row of games and stalls you find at a Japanese summer festival. During our stay, one ran in the lobby in the evening.

It changed the shape of our night. With small kids, a ryokan evening usually goes: dinner, bath, then an awkward hour where everyone is full, clean and bored.

Here, there was a reason to leave the room again after dinner. Our older daughter took the games more seriously than anyone else in the lobby.

Our younger one ignored the games completely. She had found the music.

The Toji Jug Band: Live Music with a Retro Feel

KAI Beppu’s signature show is the “Toji Jug Band”. Staff in happi coats play tubs, buckets and hot spring water as instruments, in the spirit of old Beppu’s nightlife.

The sound is cheerful and nostalgic. Our younger daughter planted herself in front of the band, swayed along, and would not move until the last song.

It gave us the easiest bedtime of the trip: one tired, happy small person carried straight back to the room. The show is gentle enough that parents can sit back and enjoy it too.

Ask at check-in what is on during your stay and when, then plan dinner and bath time around it.

Shaved Ice with Your Feet in the Footbath

The footbath looks out over Beppu Bay. On a hot July afternoon, the best thing we did there was also the simplest: shaved ice (kakigori) with our feet in the hot spring water.

Hot feet, cold mouth. The kids turned it into a game, the summer version of the hot-and-cold bath game they once invented at an Aso ryokan in winter.

A footbath is also the easiest way into onsen with small children. Nobody undresses, there is no etiquette to explain, and they can stop the moment they have had enough.

If your kids are new to hot springs, start here, then read our onsen etiquette guide for families.

The Room: Tatami and a Window Full of Sea

Every room faces the bay. Ours was a tatami room with a low sofa, and the window was more or less filled with Beppu Bay.

Tatami works well with children: a soft floor, no bed to fall off, and space to spread out. The view kept our older one busy counting ships before dinner.

If you need futons for small children or space for four, check the room details or ask the ryokan when you book.

What Could Be Better for Families

  • No pool and no kids’ room. Plan an afternoon outing if your kids need to run.
  • Price. It is well above our usual nightly budget. We treat it as a once-a-year night and stay somewhere simpler on other Beppu trips.
  • Calm spaces. Outside the lobby events, it is a quiet ryokan. Our kids were fine, but parents of very loud toddlers may feel self-conscious.

By car, Beppu is a little over two hours from Fukuoka on the expressway. That is about the limit our kids will sit through without a proper stop. Parking at the ryokan is free.

Without a car, KAI Beppu is about a 10-minute walk from Beppu Station.

A KAI night fits our usual Beppu day well: the Hells (jigoku) in the morning before the tour groups, then lunch, a quiet afternoon, and the ryokan in the evening.

Chinoike Jigoku, the red Blood Pond Hell, is the one our kids still talk about. Our Beppu with kids guide has the full day plan. Harmony Land vs African Safari compares the two big family outings near Beppu.

5 Tips for Booking KAI Beppu with Kids

  • Book early for summer holidays and long weekends. Dates that suit families go first.
  • Ask about the evening events at check-in, and eat dinner early enough to enjoy them.
  • Ask about children’s meals and futons when you book, especially with toddlers.
  • Bring light clothes for the footbath in summer, such as shorts or trousers you can roll up.
  • Do the Hells in the morning and check in from 2:30 pm, so the kids still have energy for the lobby.
