Kyushu is one of the easier parts of Japan to budget for, but the total swings a lot depending on where you sleep and how you get around. We pulled the numbers from official fare pages and from the price research already in our guides, then added them up for a real family.
Everything below is for two adults and two elementary-school children, as of October 2026. Prices change, so treat the ranges as planning figures and confirm at booking.
How Much Does a Kyushu Family Trip Cost? (Quick Answer)
For two adults and two elementary-school kids, hotel, local transport and one big attraction come to about ¥77,000 to ¥220,000 over 5 nights with budget to mid-range choices, before flights and meals. An upper-tier suite alone can add up to ¥300,000. Hotels cause most of the spread, from ¥60,000 to ¥300,000 for five nights depending on the tier you choose.
Our Assumptions (Read This First)
- Who: 2 adults and 2 children aged 6 to 11.
- How long: 6 days and 5 nights, based in Fukuoka near Hakata Station.
- Exchange rate: 1 USD = ¥158 (early October 2026, rounded). Yen amounts are what you actually pay, so check the rate on your travel dates.
- Not included: international flights, travel insurance and souvenirs. Meals and most tickets are shown as unit prices, not totals.
- Season: hotel ranges vary by season, so busy weeks such as Golden Week and Obon will sit at the top end or above.

Hotels: The Biggest Swing Factor
Most family-friendly rooms near Hakata Station run roughly ¥12,000 to ¥34,000 per night, with budget chains at the lower end. That is the range our Hakata family hotel guide found when we compared them.
- Budget twin rooms: ¥12,000-¥20,000 per night, which is ¥60,000-¥100,000 for five nights.
- Mid-range twin or triple rooms: ¥18,000-¥30,000 per night, which is ¥90,000-¥150,000 for five nights.

Getting Around: Rail Pass, Rental Car or City Transit
This is the second-biggest choice, and the cheapest answer is often neither a pass nor a car. If you stay in Fukuoka, the subway and buses cost far less than either.
Official JR Kyushu pass prices for children aged 6 to 11 are half the adult fare. For our family of four, the 5-day Northern Kyushu pass is ¥51,000 and the 5-day All Kyushu pass is ¥72,000. A pass only pays off if the single fares on your route add up to more, so price your own route first.
A rental minivan averages about ¥10,500 per day with ETC on a 5-day hire, and a child seat is charged per rental, not per day (¥1,650 for an infant seat and ¥1,100 for a junior seat at Toyota Rent a Car). Add parking at your hotel. Our rental car guide for Fukuoka families has the full cost build-up, and car vs train for Kyushu helps you choose.
The Kyushu Expressway Pass (KEP) used to be a common way to cap toll costs, but the operator’s user agreement lists its service as ending on 30 September 2026. We could not confirm an extension, so check the NEXCO West Japan page before you plan around it.
Food: Build Your Own Daily Budget
Meals depend entirely on your family’s habits, so we show unit prices and let you multiply.
- Udon: budget ¥500-¥850 per adult once toppings are on. A plain bowl is ¥390 at Maki no Udon and ¥399 at Sukesan.
- Ramen: a basic bowl at Ichiran is about ¥980, or ¥1,080 at some city branches and late at night.
- Conveyor sushi: plates run about ¥110 at Hama Sushi and ¥120-¥150 at Sushiro, depending on the branch.
- Family restaurants: kids’ plates are ¥548-¥625 at Joyfull and about ¥400-¥550 at Gusto.
One worked example: an udon lunch at Sukesan with two adults on the ¥760 signature bowl and two children sharing plain ¥399 bowls comes to roughly ¥2,300. Our family food guide to Fukuoka lists more chains and what each costs.
Attractions and Free Things to Do
Admission is the easiest part to keep small. Marine World Uminonakamichi is a good price check for a full-day attraction.
- Marine World price: Adults ¥2,500; elementary and junior high school ¥1,200; age 3 to pre-school ¥700; under 3 free
- Marine World hours: 9:30-17:30 (last entry 16:30)
For our family that is ¥7,400 (2 x ¥2,500 plus 2 x ¥1,200). We do not total other admissions because each attraction sets its own prices, so check the official page of anything on your list. Our free things to do in Fukuoka guide fills the gaps between paid days.
Three Worked Budget Examples
These are our own sums from the figures above, for 5 nights and 6 days. They cover hotel, local transport and Marine World only.
| Example | How we added it up | Total in yen | About in USD |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fukuoka only, budget | Budget hotel + 5 subway day passes (¥9,600) + Marine World | ¥77,000-¥117,000 | $490-$740 |
| Rail pass, mid-range | Mid hotel + Northern Kyushu 5-day pass + Marine World | ¥148,400-¥208,400 | $940-$1,320 |
| Rental car, mid-range | Mid hotel + 5-day minivan + hotel parking + Marine World | ¥157,400-¥219,900 | $1,000-$1,390 |
Add flights, meals and any other tickets on top. USD figures use 1 USD = ¥158 and are rounded.
2026 Rule Changes That Affect Your Budget
- Departure tax: Japan’s departure tax is ¥3,000 per person from 1 July 2026. Children under 2 are exempt, and it is normally added to your air or sea ticket rather than paid at the airport. If you booked before 1 July, check with your airline how it was handled.
- Tax-free shopping: from 1 November 2026, tax-free shopping switches to a refund system. The goods must leave Japan within 90 days, and you present your passport at customs. Shops differ in how they handle it, so ask at the register. Our tax-free refund guide for Fukuoka families walks through the airport steps.
- Expressway pass: see the KEP note above and check before you rely on it.
Ways to Trim the Bill
- Pick a mid-tier hotel near a station so you can skip the rental car on city days.
- Stay in Fukuoka and use the subway day pass for most days.
- Order kids’ plates and conveyor sushi instead of full set meals.
- Alternate paid attractions with free parks and shrines.
- Price your own route against the rail pass before buying it. Our 7-day Kyushu itinerary by train shows a full route you can price.
