Kyushu in March with Kids: Weather, Cherry Blossoms & Spring Break (2027)

March is the month Kyushu switches from winter to spring, and for families it is one of the most rewarding — and most easily mistimed — months of the year. The first week can still feel like February. The last week brings cherry blossoms, Japanese spring break and some of the busiest hotel nights of the season. Knowing which half of the month you are booking makes a bigger difference than in almost any other month.

This guide covers what a family trip to Kyushu in March actually looks like: real temperatures, when the cherry blossoms opened last season, how spring break changes prices and crowds, and how to get around. For the weeks before, see our guide to Kyushu in January and February with kids.

Kyushu in March with Kids (Quick Answer)

March is mild and changeable in Kyushu: Fukuoka averages highs of 15°C (59°F) and lows of 7°C (45°F). Early March is quiet, cheap and good for strawberry picking. Cherry blossoms open around March 21–27 in a typical year, and late March brings Japanese spring break, so book rooms for the last ten days early.

March Weather in Kyushu: Early, Mid and Late March

March warms fast. The figures below are Japan Meteorological Agency climate normals (1991–2020) — a planning baseline, not a forecast. The highland row is from the Aso-Otohime weather station, which JMA lists as reference values only.

Area March high / low March rain Notes for families
Fukuoka (north coast) 15.0°C / 7.2°C (59°F / 45°F) about 104 mm Light-jacket days, cold evenings
Kagoshima (south) 17.5°C / 8.7°C (64°F / 48°F) about 161 mm Warmest, but the wettest of the three
Aso highlands 12.7°C / 1.2°C (55°F / 34°F) — Near-freezing mornings; pack winter layers

Early March still behaves like late winter. Mornings are cold, the highlands can see frost, and you will want a proper coat. Mid-March is the turning point: sunny afternoons are genuinely pleasant for park days, but a cold snap can drop temperatures back by several degrees for a few days. Locals call this hanabie, the chill that often arrives just as the blossoms open. Late March is the warmest stretch, with T-shirt afternoons on good days and cool evenings that still need a jacket.

When Do Cherry Blossoms Open in Kyushu in March?

In a typical year the cherry blossoms open in the third or fourth week of March and reach full bloom about a week later, around the turn of the month. The 2027 forecasts are published by Japanese weather companies in the new year, so the safest planning tool right now is last season’s record. These are the official JMA observation dates for 2026, with the long-term normal in brackets.

City First bloom 2026 (normal) Full bloom 2026 (normal)
Fukuoka March 24 (March 22) April 3 (March 31)
Saga March 21 (March 24) April 3 (April 2)
Kumamoto March 23 (March 22) April 2 (April 1)
Nagasaki March 27 (March 23) April 3 (April 2)
Oita March 24 (March 24) April 5 (April 4)
Miyazaki March 24 (March 23) April 3 (April 2)
Kagoshima March 27 (March 26) April 5 (April 5)

Two takeaways for families. First, the lowland cities bloom within a few days of each other, so you cannot reliably “chase” the blossoms south to north the way you can on Honshu. Second, a trip in the last week of March almost always sees some blossoms, but full bloom usually lands right at the end of March or in the first days of April. If cherry blossoms are the point of the trip, our spring in Kyushu guide lists the best family hanami spots by prefecture, and the five-day cherry blossom route strings them together.

In Fukuoka, the easiest first hanami is Maizuru Park (Fukuoka Castle ruins) around the castle ruins — flat, central and Free to enter. For the toddler logistics (toilets, picnic spots and the quieter corners), see our Fukuoka cherry blossom picnic guide.

Early March vs Late March: Which Half Suits Your Family?

This is the decision that matters most. The two halves of March feel like different seasons.

March 1–19 March 20–31
Weather Cool to cold; coats needed Mild days, cool evenings
Cherry blossoms None in most years (plum blossoms fading) Opening to near full bloom
Crowds Low High on weekends and at hanami spots
Hotel prices Close to winter lows Spring break peak
Strawberry picking Good: big berries, easier bookings Still running, prices starting to fall
Best for Toddlers, budget trips, onsen-focused trips Families who want cherry blossoms

One date to note for 2027: Vernal Equinox Day falls on Sunday, March 21, so Monday, March 22 is a substitute holiday (both confirmed in Japan’s official 2027 calendar). That makes March 20–22 a three-day weekend for Japanese families, and it sits right at the start of spring break.

What Is On in Kyushu in March

Plum blossoms at Dazaifu Tenmangu. The plum season runs ahead of the cherry blossoms and is usually fading by early March.
  • Strawberry picking: Greenhouse farms around Fukuoka run their season from late December into May, and March is a sweet spot with good berries and easier weekend bookings than January. Our Fukuoka strawberry picking guide compares farms, prices and how to book.
  • Plum blossoms (early March): The last of the plum season at Dazaifu Tenmangu. Go in the first days of the month; by mid-March most trees are finished.
  • Hinamatsuri (March 3): Girls’ Day. Department stores, hotels and old merchant houses put out tiered displays of hina dolls through February and early March.
  • Tulips at Huis Ten Bosch: The theme park’s spring flower event runs from February into early April. Last season it ended on April 6, 2026; the 2027 dates are not announced yet.
  • Uminonakamichi spring flowers: The seaside park’s spring flower festival opened on March 20 last season (2026), with the famous nemophila hill peaking in April. Check the park’s site for the 2027 dates.
  • Field burning in Aso: The Aso grasslands are traditionally burned in early spring, usually in March, to keep them as open pasture. For a few weeks the hills look black until new green shoots arrive in April. Burning days depend on the weather and some roads close, so check before you drive up.
Blossom-Season Stays for Families

Late March rooms go first. These four put you close to the spring sights, so you are not crossing a city with tired kids.

  • Hotel Okura Fukuoka (Hakata Riverain): On the Naka River between Hakata and Tenjin, handy for evening riverside walks during blossom week.
  • Grand Hyatt Fukuoka (Canal City): Rainy-day insurance — the hotel connects to Canal City Hakata’s shops and food courts.
  • Hotel Europe (Huis Ten Bosch): Stay inside the resort during tulip season and see the flower fields before the day-trippers arrive.
  • Kamenoi Bessou (Yufuin): Detached villas beside Lake Kinrin, where the cherry trees bloom a little later than the coast.

Spring break dates fill early — check late-March availability first.

Spring Break Crowds and Prices: The Late-March Catch

Japanese schools finish the school year in late March and start the new one in April. The break between them runs from roughly the last week of March to the first week of April; exact dates are set by each city’s board of education. It is a favourite family travel window inside Japan, and it overlaps almost exactly with the cherry blossoms.

  • Hotels: Weekend rates in Fukuoka, Kumamoto and the onsen towns rise sharply in the last ten days of March. Family rooms and ryokan with private baths sell out first, so book these about two months ahead.
  • Hanami spots: Popular parks are packed on full-bloom weekends. Go on a weekday morning, or before 9am at weekends.
  • Theme parks and aquariums: Busier than in February, especially on the March 20–22 long weekend.
  • The easy win: Travel March 1–19 for winter prices with spring weather arriving, or go late but pick weekdays for the big sights.

Getting Around Kyushu in March

Check Rental Prices

March is a good month for a self-drive loop: the mountain roads are clear of snow by most of the month, and the Aso and Kuju highlands are easiest to reach by car. Two rules before you rent. Japan requires a child seat for children under six, so add one when you book. Most visitors also need an International Driving Permit (or an official Japanese translation of their licence, depending on the country) as well as their home licence.

If you would rather use trains, a city-based trip around Fukuoka, Kumamoto and Nagasaki works well by rail. Our car vs train comparison for families helps you decide, and the seven-day rental car itinerary shows a full loop with driving times.

What to Pack for Kyushu in March with Kids

Pack for two seasons. March days can swing ten degrees between morning and afternoon.

  • A warm mid-layer and a windproof jacket for everyone. Early March and the highlands still need a winter coat.
  • A compact rain jacket or umbrella. Spring rain fronts move through every week or so.
  • A picnic mat. Hanami is a picnic, and park lawns are cold and damp in March.
  • Allergy medicine if anyone has hay fever. Cedar and cypress pollen is heavy in Japan in early spring, and some days bring hazy air from the continent.
  • Layers you can strip off indoors. Trains and shops are still heated.

A Sample Five-Day Late-March Family Route

This loop suits a late-March trip with children aged about four and up. It keeps the drives under three hours and puts one big sight in each day.

  1. Day 1 — Fukuoka: Hanami picnic at Maizuru Park, then an indoor afternoon if the weather turns.
  2. Day 2 — Fukuoka to Kumamoto: Kumamoto Castle and its cherry trees. Entry is ¥800 high school and above / ¥300 elementary and junior high / preschoolers free.
  3. Day 3 — Aso and Kurokawa: Drive up to the caldera, then spend the night in an onsen town. Yamamizuki in Kurokawa takes children and has family rooms with private outdoor baths. More options are in our Kurokawa family stay guide.
  4. Day 4 — Yufuin and Beppu: A morning walk around Lake Kinrin, then on to Beppu. Suginoi Hotel is the easy family choice, with big buffets and a lot of bath space.
  5. Day 5 — Back to Fukuoka: Return by highway or limited express train.

Not keen on driving the mountain roads yourself? A private car with a driver for a Kyushu day trip covers the Aso and Yufuin leg without the stress of navigating hairpins with kids in the back.

Kyushu, Okinawa or Hokkaido in March?

All three come up when families plan a March trip, and they are very different.

  • Hokkaido is still in winter. Sapporo’s March normals are a high of 4.5°C (40°F) and a low of −2.4°C (28°F), with snow on the ground. Pick it for snow, not blossoms.
  • Kyushu is in early spring: mild days, blossoms at the end of the month and the widest mix of cities, onsen and countryside.
  • Okinawa is already warm enough for the beach, and its cherry blossoms finished in February. Our Okinawa in March and April guide covers sea-opening dates and spring break there. Many families combine a Kyushu blossom week with a few Okinawa beach days.

Is March a Good Time to Visit Kyushu with Kids?

Yes, as long as you choose your half of the month on purpose. Early March is the better-value, calmer option: winter prices, few queues and good strawberry picking, with coats still needed. Late March is the cherry blossom window, and you share it with Japanese families on spring break.

For most families with young children, a trip from about March 14 to 24 is a good compromise. It is noticeably milder than early March, still mostly outside the busiest spring break nights, and early blossoms are possible at the end. If full bloom is a must, stay into the first days of April — our Fukuoka Flower Show guide covers the April 3–7, 2027 show, which the organisers have already confirmed. Our Kyushu in April with kids guide covers what comes next, from early-April full bloom to Golden Week.
