Okinawa’s December Weather: What It Actually Feels Like

On paper, December in Okinawa averages highs around 20°C and lows around 15–16°C. On a sunny, still afternoon it genuinely feels like late spring — our kids ran around in T-shirts more than once.

The real variable is the north wind. When a cold front pushes through, that same 18°C day feels closer to 12°C on the coast, and outdoor lunch plans suddenly need a rethink.

The sea itself is still around 22–23°C, which is why wetsuit-based snorkeling and diving tours (including the famous Blue Cave) run all winter. Operators supply kids’ wetsuits, and our elementary schooler was warmer in the water than on the windy boat deck.

For guaranteed water time with toddlers, book a resort hotel with a heated indoor pool. December’s low room rates make this the cheapest time of year to get that pool-plus-ocean-view combo.

Churaumi Aquarium: the December anchor day

The whale sharks don’t care what month it is, and in December you can actually stand at the front of the Kuroshio tank.
