Kyushu in April with Kids: Weather, Crowds, Festivals & Golden Week (2027)

April is Kyushu at its most comfortable. The cherry blossoms are usually at or just past full bloom in the first days of the month, the countryside turns green, and the weather settles into mild, walkable days. For families it is close to ideal — with two crowd peaks to plan around: the end of Japanese spring break in the first week, and Golden Week from April 29.

This guide covers what a family trip to Kyushu in April looks like: real temperatures, how early, mid and late April differ, which flower events and festivals are on, and how to handle the crowds. If you are coming earlier, see our guide to Kyushu in March with kids.

Kyushu in April with Kids (Quick Answer)

April is one of the best months for a family trip to Kyushu. Fukuoka averages highs of 20°C (68°F) and lows of 12°C (53°F). Cherry blossoms are usually at full bloom in the first days of April, mid-April is the quietest stretch, and Golden Week crowds start on April 29, 2027.

April Weather in Kyushu

April is mild almost everywhere, but mornings in the mountains are still cold. The figures below are Japan Meteorological Agency climate normals (1991–2020) — a planning baseline, not a forecast. The highland row is from the Aso-Otohime weather station, which JMA lists as reference values only.

Area April high / low April rain Notes for families
Fukuoka (north coast) 19.9°C / 11.5°C (68°F / 53°F) about 118 mm Comfortable all day; light jacket for evenings
Kagoshima (south) 21.8°C / 12.9°C (71°F / 55°F) about 195 mm Warmest, but expect more rain days
Aso highlands 18.0°C / 5.7°C (64°F / 42°F) — Warm afternoons, chilly mornings

Rain comes in fronts every few days rather than as a rainy season. That does not start until around June. For most families, a light fleece plus a rain jacket covers the whole month.

Early, Mid and Late April: What Changes

April 1–7 April 8–25 April 26–30
Cherry blossoms Full bloom to petal fall in the lowlands Finished in cities; later in the highlands Finished
Other flowers Tulips, Flower Show Nemophila, azaleas, fresh green Wisteria
Crowds High (end of spring break) Lowest of the month Rising fast (Golden Week)
Hotel prices High Moderate Peak
Best for Families who want blossoms Value, calm sightseeing, driving Only if school dates force it

The middle of the month is the quiet spot. Japanese children are back at school from around the second week of April, the blossoms have passed, and Golden Week has not started. If your dates are flexible, April 8–25 gives you the April weather with the fewest people.

Cherry Blossoms in Early April

Full bloom along a river in Kitakyushu. In most years the lowland trees peak in the first days of April.

Kyushu’s lowland cherry trees usually reach full bloom between the last days of March and the first week of April. The 2027 forecasts come out in the new year, so last season is the best guide for now. According to official JMA observations, full bloom in 2026 came on April 2 in Kumamoto, April 3 in Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki and Miyazaki, and April 5 in Oita and Kagoshima.

After the first week, blossoms in the cities fall quickly. Higher ground blooms later, so a mid-April trip can still catch late trees in the hills. Our spring in Kyushu guide lists the best family hanami spots, including later-blooming highland ones, and the Kyushu cherry blossom itinerary turns them into a five-day route. In Fukuoka, Maizuru Park (Fukuoka Castle ruins) is the easy, stroller-friendly choice.

Festivals and Flower Events in Kyushu in April

April is flower season more than festival season. Here is what to plan around. Only the Fukuoka Flower Show and the Golden Week holidays are confirmed for 2027; the other dates are last season’s and will be updated when organisers announce them.

For the nemophila, our Uminonakamichi Seaside Park guide covers getting there; parking is 530 yen/day. If you are staying into May, the Hakata Dontaku family guide shows where to watch the parade with kids.

April Stays Families Book Early

Rooms for the first week and for Golden Week go months ahead. These four suit an April itinerary.

  • Hilton Fukuoka Sea Hawk (Momochi): A big seaside hotel next to the baseball dome, with space to spread out between city days.
  • Hotel Nikko Huis Ten Bosch: Next to the theme park, so the last of the tulips and the evening lights are a short walk away.
  • Aso Farm Land (Minami-Aso): Dome-shaped rooms inside a farm park with animals and play areas, as the grasslands turn green.
  • Kamenoi Hotel Aso: A large onsen hotel and an easy base for an Aso drive.

Golden Week rooms sell out first — check April 29 to May 5 early.

Is Kyushu Crowded in April?

Only at the two ends of the month. Early April is the last part of Japanese spring break, which runs from roughly the last week of March to the first week of April (each city sets its own dates). Combined with full bloom, that makes the first weekend of April one of the busiest of spring.

Golden Week is the bigger peak. In 2027 the holidays fall like this:

  • Thursday, April 29: Showa Day
  • Saturday–Sunday, May 1–2: weekend
  • Monday–Wednesday, May 3–5: Constitution Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day

Expect the heaviest travel from May 1 to May 5. Some Japanese families also take Friday, April 30 off to make a seven-day break. Hotels, highways, theme parks and Shinkansen reserved seats are all at their busiest. If Golden Week is your only option, book rooms several months ahead and plan early starts. Our Okinawa Golden Week guide shows the same crowd tactics for the islands.

Getting Around in April: Self-Drive or Private Driver

Skip the Golden Week Train Crush

Reserved trains and highway buses fill up in late April. A car lets you choose quiet hours and back roads.

Japan requires child seats for children under six.

April is the best month of the spring for driving. The mountain roads are clear, the Aso grasslands are turning green after the early-spring burning, and daylight lasts past 6:30pm in Fukuoka. Our Aso family drive itinerary lays out the scenic stops and lunch breaks. Rental cars in Japan need an International Driving Permit (or an official translation for some licences) alongside your home licence.

  • Castles without the heat: Kumamoto Castle is comfortable to walk in April. Entry is ¥800 high school and above / ¥300 elementary and junior high / preschoolers free.

  • Beach walks, not swims: The sea around mainland Kyushu is still too cold for most children in April. For swimming, Okinawa is the spring option.

Kyushu, Hokkaido or Okinawa in April?

  • Hokkaido is only just leaving winter. Sapporo’s April normals are a high of 11.7°C (53°F) and a low of 3.4°C (38°F), and its cherry blossoms usually arrive around the start of May. Choose it if you want to chase late blossoms.
  • Kyushu is in full spring: mild days, blossoms in the first week, then green countryside and flower parks for the rest of the month.
  • Okinawa is warm enough to swim on calm days, and most beaches open by early April. Our Okinawa in March and April guide covers swimming conditions and beach openings.

What to Pack for Kyushu in April with Kids

  • A light fleece or cardigan and a thin windproof jacket for mornings, evenings and the highlands.
  • T-shirts for afternoons. On sunny days in the south, it feels like early summer.
  • A compact rain jacket. Spring fronts pass through every few days.
  • Sun hats and sunscreen. The April sun is stronger than the temperature suggests.
  • Allergy medicine if needed. Tree pollen and occasional hazy days continue into April.

Is April a Good Time to Visit Kyushu with Kids?

Yes — for many families it is the best month of the year. The weather suits long outdoor days, the countryside is at its greenest, and mid-April has the fewest crowds of the spring.

Choose your week with care. The first days of April give you full bloom and the Flower Show, but also the end of spring break. Mid-April gives you calm and value. Late April runs straight into Golden Week. For the best balance, arrive around April 8 and leave before April 28.
